Escaping the Norm: Holidays off the Beaten Track

There is nothing wrong with travelling to highly popular tourist destinations but it is not for everyone. There are only so many times you can stand in line for hours to get into an exhibition only to shuffle around in the same queue because there are so many people wanting to see the same things. Sometimes you just want to escape the norm and go for a holiday off the beaten track.

Namibia, Africa

Namibia is where you will find the Sossusvlei Dunes, the highest sand dunes in the world. You can explore them on foot or try out sand boarding. Going on a safari in Namibia is a great way to view wild animals and you can expect to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and many more animals that have adapted to living in the harsh climate of the Kalahari Desert and the Namib Desert.

Cambodia

Cambodia is gaining popularity as a tourist destination but you can still view the amazing history that this country has to offer in relative peace. Phenom Penh is a great place to stop and view the Royal Palace, the National Museum, and the Silver Pagoda.

Angkor Wat is the biggest religious monument in the world and the truly impressive structures will leave even the most jaded people in awe. You can find great accommodation in the town of Siem Reap which is only a short distance away. Boeng Yeak Lom is a stunning green crater lake that is set in the jungle in Yeak Lom.

Transylvania, Romania

The infrastructure of Romania is not the greatest. Many of the roads are filled with potholes or made of dirt. But they also just happen to have one of the greatest roads in the world. If you love to drive make sure that you rent a car and drive on the Transfagaran Road that has been named one of the best roads in the world.

It is only open for part of the year so make sure it will be open while you are there. Head to Sovata and swim in the salty muddy water of Bear Lake that is known for its therapeutic qualities. You can also help with bear conservation in the Carpathian Mountains.

Kerala, India

Kerala is a beautiful state in south western India that has many beautiful natural areas just waiting for you to discover. Visit the city of Kochi and visit Fort Kochi Beach, St. Francis Church, and Hill Palace. Rent a houseboat to cruise the backwaters and you will see amazing scenery, cranes, and amazing beaches. The food in Kerala is fabulous so be sure to indulge every chance you get.

Panama

Panama is great place to travel to because it is still quite cheap even though it offers some of the best scuba diving in the world. Because of the narrowness of the country in places you can easily go diving off the west coast in the morning and off the east coast in the afternoon.

The Pacific Ocean is on the west coast and you can expect to see a variety of sea-life such as whales, sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins. The Caribbean Sea is off the east coast and it has better visibility. You can expect to see shipwrecks, and many brightly coloured tropical fish.
